Council applies for grants

Jacksonville City Council will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the council chambers in the Norman Activity Center, 526 E. Commerce St., to discuss applications for a couple of grants for use by the city.

The first will be to the governor’s Criminal Justice Division as part of the Safe Parks and Special Events Project.

The $12,000 grant would be used for a mule vehicle to patrol Nichols Green Parks and for use at special events like the Tomato Fest, July 4 events at  Lake Jacksonville and the Tops in Texas Rodeo.

The second grant, from Oncor Electric Delivery Company, would be a matching grant for up to $50,000 or 50 percent of energy efficiency projects. The grant monies could only be used to pay for equipment, materials and labor to complete projects designed to reduce energy spending by the city.

The council will also appoint Mayor Robert Haberle, City Secretary Betty Thompson and Finance Director Freddy Thomas as the authorized signators for the Texas Community Development Block Grant.

A city election, in conjunction with Jacksonville Independent School District’s election, will be set on May 8.

The council will discuss helping the Jacksonville Economic Development Corporation purchase a new fuel pump with a credit card reader for the lake’s concession area. The $30,000 to purchase the pump will be reimbursed to JEDCO by the city.

Amendments to the city’s purchasing policy will also be discussed. The amendments would raise the amount of department purchase orders without vendor quotes from $500 to $750 and from $25,000 to $50,000 with city manager’s approval only in the case of an emergency condition to protect the public health or safety.

The council will discuss budget amendments for the current fiscal year to accommodate miscellaneous revenue, donations and payments received to fund special revenue accounts or projects.

Appointments to the Keep Jacksonville Beautiful Committee will be made to replace members who have resigned. Terms for positions held by Dale Jamerson, David Daniel and Altha Haba have expired, but the three are reappointable, if desired. Sharon Arrington and Julie Duren have resigned their positions on the committee and appointments to fill their positions will be made.

Terms of three members of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board have expired, but the three are reappointable. Royce Whitaker, Paul Travis and Dianne Giebenrath hold these positions.

Jacksonville City Council meets at 6 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month in the city council chambers, Norman Activity Center, 526 E. Commerce. The meetings are open to the public.
