PROGRESS REPORT: Breaking Ground

JACKSONVILLE — Several members of East Side Elementary get a hand from their principal, Holly Searcy, and superintendent, Dr. Joe Wardell, as they turn the earth Wednesday for an ALC reading garden at the Jacksonville campus. Searcy said students from their Applied Learning Community program designed the “Daily 5” garden, incorporating reading approaches used in the program. “Without your help,” she told students, “we would not have been able to do something like this.” The Jacksonville Education Foundation awarded a $1,000 grant to help fund the project, which will culminate in a May 15 debut. “This is just another opportunity for our kids – we believe in giving them unique opportunities (to learn),” Dr. Wardell said. “This is probably one of the (most) fun things I get to do.”

Second-grader Hadley Hillencamp, daughter of KT and Kelly Hillencamp of Jacksonville, addresses a crowd gathered Wednesday.
