Burned toddler, sibling, removed from home

JACKSONVILLE —

A child who suffered burns on his chest Sunday at his home continues to recover at an out-of-area hospital, said a Cherokee County Sheriff's Office detective.

Det. Jonathan Hughes said that the case is still under investigation “to see if a criminal offense was committed or if it was strictly an accident.”

Officers responded to a call Sunday afternoon concerning a three-year-old male that was burned on his chest area while at his residence, located outside Jacksonville. The boy was transported to ETMC Hospital in Jacksonville, then taken to an undisclosed hospital outside the area, Hughes said.

A parent and a younger female sibling were at home at the time of the incident, and no other injuries were reported.

However, both children are under the care of Child Protective Services, who is investigating the incident.

Det. Hughes said doctors “haven't actually told me (the boy's condition)” but “are waiting over the next couple of days to see the extent of injuries the child has, then they can determine what treatment is given.”
