JACKSONVILLE —
Jacksonville Independent School District has been rated with superior achievement in the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas rating for the 2008-2009 school year.
Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations Lindy Finley said this marks the eighth consecutive year for the district to achieve such a rating.
“We only missed one indicator,” she said to the gathered audience of JISD Board of Trustees members during the Monday board meeting. “Our ratio of students to total staff in the district was 6.0743.”
The required range for this indicator, the only one of around 21 missed, was somewhere between 6.3-14.
She said other indicators included whether the annual financial report was filed within a month of its deadline, whether the district’s academic rating exceeded academically unacceptable and whether debt related expenditures were under $250 per student.
Finley said the audit for the 2009-2010 school year is still underway.
In addition, JISD Superintendent Dr. Joe Wardell told board members of endorsements of the JISD proposed bond which the district has received recently. These include groups such as the Jacksonville City Council and Economic Development Corporation.
“We are proud of the several groups that have supported the bond election,” Wardell said of the election with nearly $50 million and a 19 cent district tax increase at stake. “I’ve never seen that many endorsements from so many different groups for something like this.”
He also told the board of some early voting opportunities, which include JISD home football games.
The district’s public relations representative, Marc McCloud, also gave a report on the Jacksonville High School media technology class.
“They work with very real situations, very real deadlines and very real consequences for not meeting those deadlines,” McCloud said. He gave a brief history of the class and even showed a video to the board.
Action was taken on the following items:
• Approval of adopting the 2010 certified tax roll.
• Appointment of the 2010-2011 Textbook Selection Committee of around 15 members.
• Approval of the consent agenda. Items of note within this agenda include JISD improvement plans for the 2010-2011 school year and a donation of $1,050 to Fred Douglass Elementary School by Moak & Kessler, Ament & Peacock and other organizations for the purchase of Blue Ribbon Campus T-shirts.
Following the superintendent’s report, in which it was revealed the district holds 4,961 students at 166 above the last school year, the board closed into an executive session. They discussed legal matters, student discipline and/or professional personnel before adjourning the executive session, then the meeting.
JISD board meetings normally take place the third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the school’s administration building. They are open to the public and include a time for public comment on the agenda.
