LANEVILLE —
The New Summerfield Lady Hornets jumped out to take a 20-7 lead after one quarter of play during Tuesday's season opener against Laneville and never looked back.
The Lady Hornets went on to take a 68-44 win over the Lady Jackets.
Three NS girls finished up in double figures, with Maritzza Melendez leading the charge with 29 points.
Ramie Weaver and Simone Derrett added 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Melendez had two triples and made 9 of 12 free throws in the game.
Weaver shot 50-percent (3-of-6) from beyond the arc.
Cindy Medellin led NS in rebounds with 14, with 13 of those being defensive boards. Melendez also led the team in steals (7) and assists (8). Weaver also had seven steals and three blocks.
The Lady Hornets, who are coached by Josh Faucett, return to action at 6 p.m. tonight by hosting Broaddus.
