JACKSONVILLE —
Jacksonville High School student Kami Martin is one of five finalists in the United States Competition on Microsoft Office.
Martin will represent the U.S. in Microsoft Excel 2007 at the final round of the Worldwide Competition on Microsoft Office in San Diego, California on August 1-3
“Jacksonville is a small, agricultural town in East Texas, and the Jacksonville Independent School District is making great strides to certify their students and equip them with useful technology skills,” said Certiport CEO Ray Kelly.
Certiport is the leading provider of certification exam development, delivery and program management services.
“Kami is just one of many certified students in Jacksonville, and I am very impressed with the success of their program. No matter what field these high school students enter, Microsoft certification will be extremely valuable in college and the workforce,” Kelly said.
From December 2010 to June 2011, more than 72,000 U.S. students competed to demonstrate their proficiency in utilizing Microsoft’s desktop computing applications. The 2011 Worldwide Competition on Microsoft Office marks the introduction of the 2010 Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Word and Excel exams.
“I have always liked computers and while I was studying for the Excel certification exam it came pretty easily to me,” Martin said. “My teacher, Mr. Silvertooth, encouraged me to pursue the Microsoft competition and it has been a great opportunity for me. I am planning to minor in computer science in college, so I know the certification experience will be beneficial.”
MOS certifications exist primarily to meet the increasing demand for Microsoft Office proficiency among its users. Current students who passed a qualifying exam and attend an approved, degree-seeking academic institution were eligible to compete in the United States Competition.
Martin outperformed her peers by demonstrating proficiency utilizing Microsoft Excel with a perfect exam score and a completion time well below the allotted examination time.
“Kami was already interested in certification, but after I told her about the competition I saw her drive and dedication skyrocket as she worked to become a finalist,” said Chuck Silvertooth, business teacher at Jacksonville High School. “By offering and supporting certification, we are trying to change the climate in our rural community and show students they can be technology and business oriented. Colleges and employers are looking for Microsoft certification, and now Kami will have a leg up in her search.”
