Recently, several members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Cross of St. Andrew Camp No. 2009 of Cherokee County received awards from the Texas Division Command at the annual state convention, held in Galveston.
Camp Commander Kenneth McClure received the “Dixie Club” award from the National Headquarters in Tennessee for recruiting 11 new SCV members. Camp Historian Shelley Cleaver, camp Chaplain Ray Gay and Sgt. Ronnie Blackstock all received SCV Gold Cross awards.
The St. Andrew Camp has many upcoming events scheduled to complete 2008 and kick off 2009. Anyone interested in helping promote and preserve the rich history and heritage of Cherokee County can e-mail McClure at mccken127@peoplepc.com.
J’ville Kiwanis takes note of JHS’s certification programs
Jacksonville Kiwanis Club held its weekly luncheon meeting at Lupe’s Mexican Restaurant in Jacksonville on Sept. 18.
Kiwanian Judy Terry introduced Jacksonville High School’s Director of Career and Technical Education Leanne Jamison as guest speaker for the meeting.
Jamison discussed several of the 13 industry certification programs offered at JHS, including Information Technology, Welding, Construction, Nursing, Automotive and Food Service qualifying successful participants to immediately enter the work force or in many cases to pursue advanced credit, technical college, or university programs.
The Jacksonville Kiwanis Club meets every Thursday at noon for lunch.
Rusk Lions Club receives report from international association
Rusk Lions Club President Jeff Johnson called the meeting to order. Lion Tim Timmons announced that Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. would be the first Leo Club meeting at the High School. He asked for two Lions to volunteer to meet with him and the Leo Club and two Lions gladly volunteered.
Lion Ann Brown reported thus far the club has sold $350 in ticket sales for the Howe 300 Magnum rifle raffle.
all Lions in selling rifle raffle tickets for a Howe 300 Magnum, which will be given away to the lucky winner at a drawing to be held on Nov. 7, at the annual chili supper. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5.
Lions Vic Whadford and Lion Jim Netters will sell tickets at the Friday night football game between Rusk and Carthage on Oct. 17.
On Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Rusk Chamber of Commerce’s annual Pioneer and Heritage Festival at the Texas State Railroad Park, the Lions operated the horseshoe pitching event and were selling tickets for the raffle.
Lion Albert F. Brandel, president of the Inter-national Association of Lions Clubs, recently reported there is more reason than ever for all Lions to be extremely optimistic and very, very enthusiastic about the future of Lions as the organization has shown through Sightfirst what it can do when members pool resources, energies and abilities.
Through Sightfirst, Lions have saved 30 million people from blindness; built or expanded 300 eye hospitals, clinics and wards; provided for 7.3 million cataract surgeries; trained 345,000 eye healthcare professional; and will save sight of millions more thanks to Campaign Sightfirst ll.
As of July 31, Lions Clubs International had 1,302,527 members in 45,040 clubs and 743 districts in 202 countries and geographical locations.
Red hatters lunch in Gallatin
Ladies with a Hat-titude met Oct. 4 at The Olde Store in Gallatin for their monthly lucheon and meeting.
There were 15 members present — Queen Judy Batton, Sandra Bolton, Vicky Brubaker, Barbara Sexton, Susan Vierkant, Sue Holloway, Polly Shofner, Mary Woolery, Linda Smith, Lawanda Ellis, Patsy Boyd, Mary Reynolds, Linda Jones, B.J. McCauley and Fran Marcum.
Red-hatters were dressed in purple attire and red hats, except for Birthday Hatter Linda Smith, who wore red attire and a purple hat.
Beverly Jimerson and Jean Allen, also Birthday Hatters this month, were unable to attend.
“Happy Birthday” was played on the kazoos and photos were taken. Door prizes were won by Susan, Sue, Sandra, B.J. and Vicky.
The club’s next meeting will be held Nov. 1.
