Club news

And the winner is ...

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department Employee Association recently sold raffle tickets as a fundraiser to start a scholarship program for Cherokee County high school seniors. The drawing was held June 11 and the lucky winner for a $500 gift card to Gander Mountain was David Watson from the Oakland community. Presenting Watson with the gift card are employees and employee association members Sgt. George Lindsey, Capt. Mike Lindsey and Corp. Frank Lindsey.



Rusk Lions Club holds annual banquet, meeting

Rusk Lions Club President Vic Whadford welcomed everyone to the Rusk Lions Club annual banquet for the 2007-08 year. Lion Dan West gave the invocation, Lion Jim Cromwell the pledges and Lion Tim Timmons lead the singing of two patriotic songs.

The meal was catered by Jo Nell Spedale. Introductions of new member Emily Tierman was performed by PDG Lion Ardys Brown and she thanked Lion Charlie Burfoot for bringing her into the club.

The club engaged in 20 successful projects last year. They were LCl 100 percent club; District 2S1 Eye Screening, sponsored RHS Leo Club; charter organization of Rusk Cub Scout Pack 405; and Relay for Life.

The club also held a gift certificate raffle, a Dallas Cowboys game ticket raffle, a chili supper, a holiday grocery raffle, a golf tournament, Fair on the Square 5K Run and a Lions Club Derby Daze Race, all to raise funds for the club.

The club performed a children’s health fair eye screening, gave eyeglasses to school children, gave RHS college scholarships and sent two children to Texas Lions Camp. The club held a White Cane Day for the blind, and gave to the United Fund of Cherokee County. The club also collected many pairs of eyeglasses and participated in Rusk VFD.

The club is presently promoting project Dream Tree. The motto for all Lions Club members is ‘We Serve.’

The club recognized Lion Ike Daniel for 50 years of Lionism, Lion Morris Elliott for 63 years and Lion Bill Draper for 55 years.

The theme of the annual banquet was ‘It’s a Lions Life.’ Lion Ike Daniel was praised for his 50 years of Lionism by many people present such as Lion Bill Draper, Lion George Dodd, Lion Billy Watson, Lion Vic Whadford and Lion Morris Elliott. Mrs. Edna Egbert spoke very highly of the church work performed by Lion Ike. He is a deacon and faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Rusk.

His children, Kim Anderson and Steve Daniel, made loving remarks of their dad. All those who spoke of Lion Ike could not hold back tears of gratitude.

Lion Evelyn Stewart was in charge of the door prize raffle which awarded gifts to many lucky winners. Lion Bobbie Burch presented Lion Lisa Westbrook the ‘Lion of the Year’ plaque.

Past District Governor Lion David Middleton of Alto installed the 17 2008-09 club officers.

They are Lion President Jeff Johnson, 1st Vice President Lion Evelyn Stewart, 2nd Vice President Lion Ardys Brown, 3rd Vice President Lion Terri Brown, Secretary Lion Bobbie Burch, Treasurer Lion Ann Brown, Membership Chairperson Lion Lisa Westbrook, Recording Secretary Lion Teri Brown, third year Director Lion James Campbell, second year Director Lion Jim Cromwell, first year Director Lion Jim Richings, Chaplain and Lion Tamer Lion the Rev. David O’Neil, Tail Twister Lion Tim Timmons, Song Leader Lion Jim Richings, President Agent Lion Jim Cromwell and Reporter Lion Billy Watson.

President Vic Whadford awarded every Lion with a nice certificate for their individual work accomplishments for the year.

Past President presentation was made by new President Lion Jeff Johnson, the benediction was given by Lion Billy Watson.
