Smiths mark 70 years together
Robert and Marjorie Smith of Jacksonville, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Aug. 25, 2010. They were married in Elkhart, In., on Aug. 25, 1940. They moved to Jacksonville in 2001. An anniversary celebration given by their three daughters, Jann McGaughey of Jacksonville, Joan Carter of Raleigh, N.C., and Debbie Timmers of Midland, Mich., was held at First United Methodist Church on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010. They have seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren.

Wardell speaks to Kiwanians
Dr. Joe Wardell, right, Jacksonville Independent School District superintendent, was introduced as guest speaker by Kiwanian Wayne Cessna at last Thursday’s luncheon. Dr. Wardell briefed the group on the rising educational achievement by several of the schools which include designation as Exemplary by four and two chosen as National Blue Ribbon Schools which places them in the top 1 percent in the state. He discussed in some detail the current Master Facilities Plan which may be presented in a bond issue this Fall.

Teague tells Rotary about jazz
Joe Teague educates the audience on the history and different forms of jazz at the weekly meeting of the Jacksonville Rotary. Mr. Teague teaches guitar at Lon Morris College when he isn’t entertaining people throughout East Texas in the many groups he is a member. The club meets every Wednesday at noon at Sadler’s Kitchen. Rusk Lions hear about pawn business
Lion President Vic Whadford called on Lion Ike Daniel for the invocation, Lion Jim Cromwell to lead the pledges and Lion Jim Richings to lead the singing.
Guests were Norma Daniel, Boots Burfoot and Lion Alicia Oliver. -
4-H holds project show
he 2010 4-H Summer Project Show was held Aug. 14 at the Cherokee County Extension Office. The project show is an opportunity for 4-H members to compete in up to 38 different categories — everything from woodworking to baking, canning, photography, and much more. It gives the participants a lot of room to really pursue their interest. Members are judged on their own performance, not against one another.

Cherokee Civic Theatre announces cast of Willy Wonka
The Cherokee Civic Theatre in Rusk announces that the cast has been selected for their upcoming Fall Musical, “Willy Wonka”.
The play captures Roald Dahl’s timeless story of the world-famous Candy Man, and his quest to find an heir. -
Kiwanis learn about Welcome Home parade
John Chandler, right, and Patsy Brown Dawson, center, from the Jacksonville “ Welcome Home Soldiers” Committe were the guests of Kiwanian Joan Malone at last Thursday’s luncheon held at Lupe’s Mexican Restaurant. Chandler, a veteran of the Navy and some thirty years in various law enforcement positions, discussed plans for the upcoming Seprember 18th parade to welcome local veterans of the Vietnam era. The Patriot Guard, a motorcycle group of Vietnam Veterans, who parade at some ceremonies and participate in funeral processsions honoring deceased veterans are expected to attend. Twenty two servicemen from Cherokee County lost their lives in Vietnam.
