Let freedom ring
As we approach July 4th in these United States many things happen. Days off work are planned and parties are planned. It seems we as Americans just look for a way to celebrate and at the suggestion of a holiday the plans begin.

My five cents
n the movie Groundhog Day, Bill Murray's character wakes up again and again only to find he is stuck living the same day until he finally gets the day right. Going into special session immediately after the regular session sometimes felt like groundhog day. There were several pieces of legislation I voted on five or six times as different versions came through committee and then the Senate.

This is the last week of our Century of Service Centennial Celebration. I thought it appropriate to pull one more excerpt from Mr. Barnes H. Broiles’ book, Small Town Editor – 59 Years of Journalism. I think it is still as applicable today as it was nearly 50 years ago.

Bob Bowman’s East Texas
President Theodore Roosevelt established four Texas National Forests in 1936. By 1937, the federal government had acquired more than 613,000 acres from private landowners at an average price of $4.62 an acre.
One of the most persistent myths concerning these acquired National Forests is that they were denuded, treeless and barren wastelands.
Unpublished Forest Service documents describe the entire Angelina unit (primarily in Jasper and San Augustine counties) as “cut over” and “culled.” -
My five cents
This week Texas finally received some relief from drought as thunderstorms rolled across the state. Here at the Capitol rain fell, but the real storms were inside as legislators worked to finalize legislation before the end of the special session in a few days.

It was a weekly commitment closest to the hearts of many folks in the 1950’s. We were transfixed — millions of us — on the dramatic hallmark opening by Jack Webb (alias “Joe Friday” on TV’s Dragnet.)
