Child sex abuse conviction upheld

RUSK — The conviction of George Henry Williams Jr. was upheld by the Sixth Court of Appeals last week.

Williams was convicted of continuous sexual abuse of a child in December 2008 by a Cherokee County jury and subsequently sentenced to 35 years for the offence.

“Williams had committed numerous acts of sexual abuse to a young child over a period from September 2007 through January 2008,” according to a press release from the Cherokee County District Attorney.

“On appeal, the defendant claimed that the evidence was factually and legally insufficient to support the conviction, that the court erred in not granting his requested jury charge, and that the statute was unconstitutional,” according to the release. “The Court of Appeals found that the evidence was sufficient on all points, that the trial court was correct in denying the requested jury charge, and that the defendant had not appropriately preserved the constitutionality argument for appeal.”

The state was represented by Assistant District Attorney Rachel Patton at both the original trial and on appeal, while Williams was represented by Allen Ross at the 2008 trial and by Sten Langsjoen on appeal.
