Maidens need OT to turn back Lady Tigers

HAWKINS, Texas — The Jacksonville Maidens outscored Mount Pleasant 7-4 in overtime in taking a 39-36 win over the Lady Tigers in a Class 4-A, Region II, bi-district game played at Hawkins High School Tuesday night.

Chancii Scott hit a short-range bank shot with 2:59 showing on the clock in the extended session to propel the Maidens to a 34-32 lead. It was the first time that Jacksonville led since late in the first quarter.

The Maidens extended their lead to 36-32 on a short-range shot off the window by Amber Hawkins that came with 2:13 to play in overtime.

Hawkins led all scorers with 19 points and had 11 rebounds in the second half alone, eight of which were offensive boards.

Scott, a freshman, had six points and five second-half rebounds.

The Lady Tigers pulled to within a single point, 37-36, when Shanicquia Grant hit two free throws with eight seconds to go in overtime. Grant led Mount Pleasant in scoring with 14 opoints.

The final points of the game came with six seconds to play, at which time Jacksonville’s Brittany King added two from the charity stripe, which made the final score 39-36.

The Maidens (19-15) move on to face either Waco or Mesquite Poteet in an Area Round contest later this week at a site to be determined.

The Lady Tigers (10-19), the fourth-place representative District 13-4A, end their season with Tuesday’s loss.
