Connor Crowe and Julie Jaramillo, sixth-graders at Nichols Intermediate School shape up their scarecrow with hay as part of the Nichols Art Club entry in the city's Scarecrow Trail, planned Oct. 13-25 at the Ruth Nichols Arboretum in Jacksonville. Art instructor and club sponsor Jae Nam said the school has participated in the event since it was established three years ago by the Cherokee County Master Gardeners, with work completed within a three-week period. A dozen art club students are preparing six scarecrows for exhibition, Tuesdays and Thursdays after school to work on them. The finished versions will be taken to the arboretum the day before the trail opens.
